PAGE EIGAT ° "MESSIAH' CONCERT HELPS T0-FILL NEED FOR CULTURAL LIFE Repeated instagces of Juneau's genuine appreciation of fine music and art have greatly impresed one person directly concerned with the f current musical season. Jane McMullin, director of the Juneau Singers, finds daily evidence that residents both musical and unmusical recognize the need for community support of local music, art and drama projects. Mrs. McMullin will direct the Ju- neau Singers in the Palm Sunday concert of the Easter portion of “The Messiah,” tomorrow at 2} o'clock in the 20th Century The- atre. “With intensive rehearsals for the Sunday concert,” Mrs. McMullin said today, “we have been impres- sed by the loyal and faithful at-| tendance of the singers—and it certainly isn’t always convenient for them! “All of a sudden,” she continued “it-hit me that there are dozens ot other persons volunteering to helr make this particular concert a suc- cess. Contributions of materials and labor are numerous, and the gen- erous-hearted citizens who make them expect no thanks greater than the growing cultural life of the community in which they are bring- ing up their children. “So,” she added, “we hope tha’ everyone in the Channel area will support our effort to give the com munity the best music in our power. Too, we must be practical Despite all the contributions, there still are many expenses such ac theatre rental, the cost of labor to build 4he stage (materials were loaned), and cost of materials for posters and programs. “We do hope there will be a full house tomorrow afternoon in the 20th Century Theatre. As I go around to meetings, teas and recep- tions, I hear lots of talk about the cultural needs of Juneau, and of the importance of the Juneau City Band, the Juneau Singers, the Alaskan Arts and Crafts, the Ju- neau Players and similar groups. © “If the wish for such things is here, we hope the community wil give real support. We are doing our best to make the music most worth- while.” PASTOR ZUMWALT WITH C. J. NAGELE TO BE HEREi Pastors A. L. Zumwalt, President j of the Alaska Mission, and C. J.
