TUESDAY, MARCH 28, 1950 THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE—JUNEAU, ALASKA FIRST MEETING OF NAVAL RESERVE TO BE HELD TOMORROW The first regular meeting of Ju- neau’s Naval Reserve, which has been designated as Volunteer Com- posite Unit, 17-2, by the Navy, wiil be held tomorrow evening, March 29, at 8 o’clock at Juneau Hotel witn Lt. Commander Doug Gray in charge. s Purpose of the meeting, Gray said, is to organize the general ac- | tivities of the unit, to select its vari- ous officers and to plan a schedule of future meetings. Lt. Commander Gray estimates there are from 50 | *o 75 ex-Navy, ex-Marine and ex- Coast Guard officers and enlisted attend. It is his aim to plan pro- grams of future activities in which . the men themselves are interested rather than lay out a program for . them to follow. Those who are un- able to attend tomorrow night can contact Gray at Juneau Hotel at any time for additional information. The Navy's postwar program for the Naval Reserve, it was pointed ‘out, is established upon a policy of providing (for use on a voluntary ‘basis) a wide range of training and instruction, and the most advanced 1 type of equipment, instructional ma- } | terials and facilities. The Navy has | published and is now preparing | over 200 home study correspondence | | courses and training manuals for | those Reservists unable to attend | | drills but desiring to keep up with naval organization. The Naval Reserve already has| | an enrollment of more than 1,000,000 members and it is estimated that| over 200,000 will make an annual | | two weeks training cruise during} the coming year. It is Lt. Comman- der Gray’s hope that the Junean | unit will be of sufficient strength | to make it feasible to send a ship | north to take local Reservists on| such a cruise, If not, then it is pos- | sible they may be attached to some | Washington state crew. | The Naval Reservist, a publica- | tion issued by the Bureau of Naval Personnel, is available to any Re- servist interested in receiving it and | Lt. Commander Gray said that he would be glad-to add any person’s name to the mailing list who re quests it. At holiday times turkey may mean a big meal, but in radio slang it’s a program that has been a complete failure. STATEHOOD OR FREE| NATION WANTED BY WOOD OF JUNEAU Peter Wood, Juneau real estate agent, says he has wired Trygve Lie, Secretary-General of the United Nations, for information on Alaska's joining the UN as a ‘“non-self-| governing territory.” Wood says he has cabled Lie as follows: “Unless we get statehood this ses- sion of the United States Congress, I will consider organizing party to seek separation and create the In- dependent Republic of the United | States of Alaska through the United Nations. “We have oil, iron, coal, copper, tin, wood, fish, fur, waterpowser, agriculture and gold. We would be one of the richest nations. | “If this seems absurd, so does taxation without representation. “Request you refer this to com- mittee for admission of non-seli- governing territories and forward details necessary to a formal peti- tion.” EASTERN STAR Friendship night.
