However, among the letters was one that purported to be from Mr. Martin Sommers, an editor of the aforesaid publication. So I wrote him asking permission to print and | discuss his letter. The first para- graph of my letter to him states: “A certain amount of correspon- dence, concerning the articles pub- lished on China recently by the Al- sops, has been sent to me from | several sources. One letter is sign- 1ed by you and indicates that you take the position that each person is entitled to his own opinion. I find, however, that the letter refers not to matters of opinion but to matters of fact.” However, Mr. Sommers does Ob- ject to my quoting his letter on the DR. ROBERT SIMPSON DR. As nothing that he says in it would {shake the world nor move moun- ;ains and since he objects to its quotation, I shall not quote him. The matter at issue is obviously if an opinion is based not on facts, but on rumor, hearsay, guesses and hunches, is it an opinion or is 1t nothing? That is what I wanted| to discuss. Not having read these learned articles on China, but de- pending only on the correspondence, I had no desire to enter into the controversy as to which is the greater man, Dr. H. H. Kung or Mr. T. V. Soong, both brothers- in-law of Chiang kai-Shek. Rather, I wanted to inquire whether opinions must be substan- tiated by fact or may be accepted simply because someone wants to utter them. Mr. Sommer’s com- ment was so profound on the sub- ject that I desired to quote him. as I do George Bernard Shaw, but | as he objected to my doing so be- cause of his property rights, I shall limit myself to Shaw. I have before me the three Al- sop articles and would be tempted to read them, except that life is| short and time is fleeting and who really cares whether T. V. Soong is a liberal and H. H. Kung, & banker? The simple facts are that we lost China to Soviet Russia; that the loss was consummated at Yalta; that Alger Hiss was Mr. Roosevelt's adviser at Yalta. And what matters is that Chiang kai-Shek continues to stand valiantly on Formosa, bombing Soviet China whenever he gets a chance, conducting a vast underground organi:) yion which is .upsetting the time-table of the Department and Mr. Trygve Lie in the United Nations and which started Senator McCarthy on a close scent. Although Messrs. Kung and Soong are related by marriage, they have never been wholly cordial. Dr. Kung comes of an ancient and dis- tinguished banking family. He is a lineal descendant of Confucius. I have known him intimately for more than 30 years and when I met him first, he was a much richer man than he is today. I am sure of that because his investments, both inharited and earned, were in China and most of them have been destroyed by war, revolution and Communist confiscation. He is also a man of charitable inclinations, having maintained im- portant charities both in China and in the United States. A quiet man, rather stout, and good hum- ored, he has accepted devastating abuse with kindliness and a smile. the State Department is always looking for a Third Force. They found one in Italy and in France and they are looking for it every- where, By a Third Force they mean someone who is not of the regime that exists and someone who is not a Communist.
