MONDAY, NOVEMEER 14, 1949 JUDITH COPLON TO FACE JURY; CHARGE TO BE ESPIONAGE (By Associated Press) Judith Coplon and Valentin Gub- itchey were called into Federal Court today for trial on charges of conspiring to commit espionage for Soviet Russia. Miss Coplon al- ready is under sentence of 40 months to 10 years on another charge. She is a former employee of the Department of Justice. Gub- itchev is a suspended Russtan U.N. employee. The new trial will be held in the same Federal Court building in New York-in which the 11 top American Reds were convicted. The judge of the Red trial—Harold Me- dina—has left New York for an antomobile vacation. Police. said it was just “pig shot” talk by four young people. | An FBI agent who arrested Judith Coplon and Valentin Gub- itchev was called today to testify at a preliminary hearing preced- ing formal opening of their trial on charges of spying for Russia. Robert Granville, special agenf.‘ assigned to the FBI's New York office, was called to the stand by defense counsel Archibald Palmer. Granville arrested the former girl | government worker and the Rus-| sian engineer she said she once| loved after trailing them through Manhattan streets last March 4. The case was called for trial Lefore Federal Judge Sylvester Ryan at 12:25 pm. today. Granville testified he arrested| the pair without a warrant. Under questioning by Palmer he admitted he had not tried to obtain one; from a U.S. Commissioner or a Federal Judge. One of the defense counsel's pre- trial motions attacked the legality of Miss Coplon's arrest. HOSPITAL NOTES Paul Malo and Patricia Burns were admitted to St. Ann’s Hos- pital over the weekend.
