He said studies made by the Soil Conservation Service and the| U. S. Geological Survey disclos- | ed that 30 per cent of the land in| the area is permanently frozen | swamp; 30 per cent is mountain- | cus and unsuited to farming other than grazing, and that of the re | maining 40 per cent possibly fit| for farming, only 15 per cent has! definitely been proven fre! of ice.; Wilson said the report did not | mean independent farming could not be carried on in the area. “There’s some mighty fine land in there on which a hard-working | farmer no could could earn a good | living,” he declared, adding the yland probably will be reopened to {independent settlement in the near | | future. He said the main agricultural | drawback was that ice masses form through alternate periods of severe | freezing and thawing, causing the | Lou | Willlam Lee, Oscar Frank, Ira B. b k!
