UDEBAKER'S REALLY ROLLING. UDEBAK Union Files Charges AgainstAlaska Seam SEATTLE, May 17—#— Filing of 78 charges of untair labor prac- tices against the Alaska Steam- ship Company was announced on Monday by Stewards' Union. The filings are in addition to others filed previously against the shipping line, Donl L. Rotan, union organizer said. Rotan said the charges involve refusal of the company last week o hire 78 members of the union who applied for work. The union, an American Feaera- tion of Labor group, 1S an ofrshoot of the Marine Cooks and Stewards’ Union, Congress of Industrial Or- zanizations. ‘The union split szveral months ago because of political dif- ferences among the members. Rotan said that the company ob- tained mer instead from the hir- ing hall of the CIO union. The ac- don violated the no hiring halls provision cf he Taft Hartley Labor Act and discouraged in the AFL-group, he charged. A petition for an election tof: determine collective bargaining rights on Alaskan ships has been denied by the NLRB on the grounds that the company was & member of the Pacific American Shipcwners Association. The Asso- ciation negotiates with the unions, including the CIO union, on & coastwide basis. LUNCHEON & SEWING SALE By Missionagy Society Wed., 2 p. m.
