Keicz, risheries Super- | visor, of the U. 8. Fish and Wildlife Service has ontlined a nine-point Alaska program of management and research projects. One of the earliest, extending from early April into May, will be studies of downstream migrant pink salmon. The little fish going out to sea will te briefly trapped for analysis of abundance, the figures to be used in predicting future returns. Test sec- tions in northern and southern Southeast Alaska will be in charge respectively, of H. C. Seudder. Ju- neau, and Fred Headlee, manage- ment agent at Ketchikan. Both will work with Mitchell Hanavan, of Se- attle headquarters, who is in charge of pink salmon research. Construction work under the Ugashik River. A picket-like fence of one-inch eluminum tubing set 1'% inches apart is interrupted by a series of gates where fish are counted. This will be the first year that driven piling is used. Similar piling | weirs will be installed in the Chignik River. The Ugashik and Chignik weir programs are directed by Ber- tel W. Johnson and Charles Petry, respectively. ‘The fourth i :nvolves researci into management protlems on the important Bristol Bay red salmon run. This will be directed by George Eicher. Also on red salmon—the fertility relationships in fresh water red salmon—will be the work at Kar- luk in charge of Richard Shuman. Important herring studies will be made in Southeast Alaska, Prince William Sound and Kodiak Island, under the general direction of Law- rence Kolloen, with Carl Elling in! charge of the work to the West- ward. The seventh project will be at the stream improvement program will|Little Port Walter Biological Sta- start about May 1. Fishways will be put in at least four Southeast Al- aska streams in the area between Etolin and Prince of Wales Islands. Work on the Brooks river fish- way in the Naknek watershed will be airborne. The stream improve- ment program is under direction of Marcus Meyer. The third major project is the Bristol Bay weir operation, involv- ing a 1,100-foot span across the tion—long-range studies in sur- veying pink salmon in fresh water. Hanavan is in charge. Another program concerns shrimp including tagging in the Wrangell- Petersburg area; also general man- agement in that area, Danie]l Bates making the survey, and similar stud- ies in the Kodiak area by Roy Linds- ley. ‘Tests of streams for the effects of logging and pulp mill activities will P Saturday Closing BANKS Pursuant to the Act passed by the 1949 Session of the Legislature of the Territory of Alaska known as Senate Bill No. 5 “Authorizing Banks to Operate on the Basis of a Five-Day Week”, which Act was ap- proved March 2, 1949, of Juneau will remain the undersigned banks closed for business on SATURDAYS of each week, commencing SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 1949. be made in cooperation with the Forest Service Research Center of which Ray Taylor is forester in charge.
