Like the country of its compoesr’s birth, the work is characteristically rugged. It shows strength and determination backed by mili- taristic challenge at times, and evidences solemn rever- ence for the grandeur and beauty of nature. It was this symphonic poem which first stimulated interest in music with a Finnish background. Sibelius’ compositions, comprising many works in all fields, have brought him recognition throughout the civilized world as a composer of true greatness. La Rougette—Piano Solo ... Badinage for Brasses ... ‘Webster defines “badinage” as playful jesting or banter. After a sixteen measure introduction the trombones speak up in “beguine” rhythm. Then the solo trom- bone goes it‘alone in a cadenza ad lib, which is an- swered in the same style by the baritone. The cornets reply to all this, this badinage, in a beautiful andante passage and “tango”. Everyone joins at the conclusion in a spirited “samba”. The Stars and Stripes Forever ...
