MONDAY, JANUARY 24, 1949 AAPMA ORGANIZED IN JUNEAU; FOUR OFFICERS ELECTED Newspapers and radio stations served by the Associated Press in Alaska organized the Alaska ASso- ciated Press Members Association over the weekend to further the collection and distribution of news in the Territory. The organization, similar to those now functioning in each of the 48 states, will be headed by Robert J. Atwood, publisher of the An- Lorage Times. wiliam J. Wagner, president of luska Broadcasting Company, 5 elected chairman for radio; uirs. Helen Troy Monsen, publisher of the Dgily Alaska Empire. chair- man for dai newspapers, and Julius Ferney, publisher of the Sitka Eentinel, chairman for tri- weekly and weekly newspapers. Murlin B. Spencer, chief of the Seattle AP bureau, told repre- sentatives of 11 of the 17 news- papers and radio stations served by the AP in Alaska that comprehen- sive program is planned to meet their expanding needs. Spencer said that coverage of the current Territorial legislative ses- sions by an Associated Press staff- er ior the first time in history is only the first step in that pro- gram. The legislative coverage by James Hutcheson, of the Seattle bureau, was made possible by the coopera- tion of all papers and radio sta- ticns, he said. Those attending the organiza- tion meeting heard reports from Georg Nelson Meyers of the Fair- banks News-Miner on news bar- riers in Alaska, from Hutcheson on the legislature, and from Elmer Friend, managing editor of the Ju- neau kmpire, on recent election coverage, HOSPITAL NOTES Admitted to St. Ann’s Hospital on Saturday for medical treatment were Ernest Page and James R.
