Only none women, one of them a Senator, were elected. Women made an even lower mark in the Eigthtieth Congress, in which there were seven of their sex in’the House. The Seventy-ninth Congress had 11 women Representatives, three having been appointed to fill unexpired terms of their hus- bands. In this Congress women hold about 1.7 per cent of the seats, well below feminine membership in legislative bodies of most other nations. In the new Indian Constitutional Assembly women occupy 5 per cent of the seats. True, a woman, Mrs, Margaret Chase Smith, crashed the Senate, and she was the first of her sex to do so without having been given a foot in the door by means of an appoinfment. She is rated a first- rate choice. And two new women Representatives, Judge Reva Beck Bosone, Democrat, of Utah, and Mrs. Cecil M. Harden, Republican, of Indiana, a school teacher who won in' a hard fight, will bring the same high ability to the House, as will the five | to do with. v to finance their campaigns. The Govern- ment through the income tax returns knows every- thing it has any right to know about our wages and what we do with them. If it is important that it know what we spend on ink, for example, or men’s hats, an inquiry of a few manufacturers would provide the answer, and not for a small percentage of our people but for all of them. Statehood for Alaska (Ketchikan News) Even though the Truman Administration is sup- posed to be friendly to the plan for statehood for Alaska, the fight for self-autonomy should be kept active. Under the most favorable conditions possible, statehood is not likely to come in a hurry. Even after it is granted there is a constitutional convention and a lot of preliminary action before we will be allowed to exercise the full powers of statehood.
