We live here and in- tend to make this our home for many years to come. Because salmon canning is economy today and has early days, we think s: concern of every Alaskan. offer you these facts: the backbone of Alaska’s been since the Territory’s almon conservation is the With this in mind, we Frankly, we don’t know what causes one year to be a good salmon fishing sea one a poor season. son in Alaska and another Nor, as nearly as we can find out, does anyone else know the answer to this age- old riddle. United States. governme With all interested groups — from the nt to the salmon industry itself—spending a good deal of money and time on scientific research, we feel certain the mystery of the salmon’s cycles will be solved in the near future. It is signficant, however, that no fish biologist or con- servationist has declared any one type of fishing gear—trap, seine or gill net—responsible for a de- pletion of salmen runs. Actually, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau in charge of salmon conservation, has authority at the present time to close every fish trap in the Territory tomorrow morning if they were believed.to be a menace to ~our salmon. We do know that abolition of fish traps in Puget Sound cut the salmon pack in haif and resulted in reduc- tion of 40 per cent of the number of canneries that operated there for a ten -year period thereafter. We‘feel that one forward step would be for Congress to enlarge the Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska so that present regulations applying to all types of gear could be rigidly enforced. Conservutlon as an argument for abolition of fish traps is mot*supported by fact. To the contrary, it is an arugment to continue trap fishing.
