Ph. 137 CAPITOL POLICE | CAPTAIN STRESSES | Broder] his first 3 Capitol who ear as Police rounding captain of Force. Capt. Broderick, who had been a member of the Pennsylvania State Pclice for 19 years before taking cver the job .on Capitol Hill, started out insisting on fine manners in men at all times. Among other things, he told his men it had to be “Yes sir, no sir, , ma'm, no ma'm” all the time, and no wise cracks ever, that drinking on the job would not be tolerated, that uniforms must al- ways be neat. The result, he says, has been a “numker of nice comments from visiters, and from Senators and Congressmen themselve: A batch of 15 new long-armers just sworn in, have increased the force to 157 men. They are all veterans, picked for their service in the Army, and their average age is about 23 years. 'HE Capitol police get an aver- age of $2,000 base pay, with overtime and other allowances, bringing it up to $2909. They are divided into three shifts of eight hours each—8 a. m. to 4 p. m., 4 p. m. to midnight, midnight to 8 a. m. All of the men must be at least| five feet, seven inches in height,: and must weigh at least 145 pcunds. They must be free of cclor blindness, deafness, or im- pediment of speech. The men are now getting their first training in Washington’s metrcpolitan police rookie school. Later, Capt. Broderick hopes they | can go'to the Police Academy. | IAPT. BRODERICK says the Chmdest, job his men have is handling an average of three or iour persons a week who seem to nave a grudge against the gov- ernment. | “They ccme to the Capitol to ¢t even, any way they can,” he ays, “and they have to be handled wit care, Sometimes it takes uee ¢ four men to handle a single case.” iheir worst trouble in the past yvear was cccasioned by the shoot- ing of Senator Bricker by a man| whe claimed some sort of injus- tice had been done him. Capt. Broderick came to Wash- ugton to head the force after our years in the Army, which in- cluded 20 months in the Aleut- ans. He is a modest man and says his 19 years’ police service (is “not long in this game.” e ‘ POLICE COURT NEWS 4 Frank Paul was fined $25 today | |by City Magistrate Willlam A.| ' Holzheimer on a drunk charge.
