Suddenly he stopped, nuzzled a basket lying on the pavement. Jack called him, he later told police, but Pal sniffed and barked, calling his master back to the bas- ket. Inside the basket, wrapped in newspapers, the youngster found a baby. Jack’s mother, Mrs. La Verne Hand, and police rushed the infant to a hospital, where three physicians said the child probably had been born without medical aid about six hows pieviously.
