Martin Victor Jr. Interviewed in his house- Lunt'ng headquarters at the Bar-{ arof Hotel, the head of Martin Victor Furs, Incorporated, told of some of the plans for development of his retail business in Juneau! and Alaska. H The company has a two-fold pur~‘ pose, said Victor. First is to selll Alaskans iur coats as cheaply as Seattle or even lower. And second is to store, clean and remodel fur | clothing for less than Seattle prices. Victor is laying plans to carry | through Chicago styles in fur coats, | manufacturing in a small modern | plant in Juneau staffed by experts. ! The Eskimo parka has been mod. ernized by Victor, so that it is| attually comfortable for wearing. | This is a great step forward from ! the typical native parka, baggy and bulky, to a tailored, smart and stylish article of fur clothing. With a background of three gen- erations of furriers, the Victor company knows how to make furs, and to make them last. A great deal of the durability in a fur coat is in the tanning or dressing of the furs. This will be done in New ! York. Everything else in the mak- ing of Martin Victor coats will be done in Juneau. Thread quality is also important, in the sewing of furs. Most import- ant, however, is the blocking of the furs as they are tailored, to avold overstretching. Many furriers stretch their material to the limit, leaving it brittle and without resiliency. The Martin Victor process, how- ever, actually gives shrinkage, and therefore more hair per square inch. “Our aim,” said Victor, “Is to give Alaskans a home fur industry handling their territory’s furs as a specialty. We want to make it both practicable and stylish for Alaskans to buy their coats in the Territory, and we will give them - modern manufacturing and tailoring so that when they go Outside they can hold their heads high and show Seattle the newest styles.” Eventually the company hopes to create outlets in other Alaskan cities, and in the States as well. “But we want to bring people to the Territory from the Outside to buy their Alaskan fur coats.” SPORTS FISHERMEN ARE GIVEN WARNING A warning was issued today by the U. 8. Pish and Wildlife Service to men, posing as sportsmen, wh> [ fish in restricted waters under sports fishing regulations but make | comiimercial sales oi their catches. Clay Scudder, Acting Fisheries Management Supervisor, said that the sale of fish, caught in restrict- ed waters, is illegal and that vio- lators will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Scudder said that the waters in question, which are restrictéd to sports fishing only, are located be- tween Midway Island and the up- per Lynn Canal. He said there is no objection to fishing in these waters, by sportsmen, provided | that no attempt is made to sell the catches. | D ALASKANS AT BARANOF ‘ Alaskans registering yesterday at ) the Baranof Hotel included Joyce | Newcomer from Haines, A.
