PITCHERS OF TIGERS KEEP TAKING THEM Secondary String Proves as Good as First- Cubs Move Up By JOE REICHLER Associated iress Sports Writer American League baismen were moaning “Tiger stay away from my doors,” today—and with good rea- son. The Detroit Tigers' pitching ha simply been poison to enemy bat ters this season. Rival managers were hopeful that once they got by the Big Four consisting of Hal Ne houser, Dizzy Trout, Virgil Trucks and Freddy Hutchinson, they might face a breather in one of the so- called second line hurlers. But the “second stringers” have proven to be tougher to beat than the regular: With the Big Four working smooth as silk during the first month of the campaign Mana Steve O'Neill did not even bothe to call up his secondary. But when Trucks took sick, Newhouser show- ed that he nceded more rest, Hal White, Al Benton and Stubby Over- mire were beckoned. Tigers Increase Lead Benton whipped the Indians 4-2 yesterday. His triumph was im- portant inasmuch as it came over the great Bobby Feller and increased tne Tigers' first-place lead in the American League to four full games over the New York Yankees and the Boston' Red Sox. After Benton had allowed three hits and one run in seven innings, O'Neill took 1o chances and relieved with New- houser. ‘The Chicago Cubs took over first place in the National League last night when they inflicted the first night defeat cf the season on the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-3 while the New York Giants were bowing to Brooklyn at the Polo Grounds, 7-3 Johnny Mize hit his 13th home run in the latter tiit.
