THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE HUTCHINSON 15 STAGING Former Se;THIe Player Wins Fifth Successive Game of Season By JOE REICHLER (Asseciated Pre-s Sports Writer) It took him a long time—nine years to b: exact—but fearless Freddie Huichinson, the picture pitcher, finally is beginning to look like the great hurler he was sup- pesed to be when the Detroit Tig- ers handed over $75,000 for his sig- nature in 1938. Heralded , as another Schoolboy Rowe, Hutchinson suddenly lost hi: stuff and won only three games for the Tigers. He divided that season and the next between Detroit and Buffalo in the International League. But the war came along. Freddie played lots of baseball under Mic ey Cochrane and Bobby Feller in the Navy and camé back last year to have a fairly good season win- ning 14 and losing 11. - At the start of this season man- ager Steve O'Neill rated him iocurth on the staff to the great Hal New- hcuser, Dizzy Trout and Virgil Trucks, but today the seiious-mind- ed son of Seattle rates right on top of his performances. Hutch wen his fifth successive game last pight after losing his first start of the season, defeating the Washington Senators at the Capital 3-2. No pitcher in the Am- ericen League has won as many. Tigers Break Tie The Tigers broke a 2-2 tie in the ninth by pushing over the deciding run. Eddie Lake walked and raced to third cn George Kell's single. He scored as Roy Cullenbine 1orced Kell. The triumph enabled the Tigers to retain their one-game margin over the Boston Red Sox who won their eighth game in their last nine starts as Joe Dobson limited the Chicago White Sox to eight hits for a 5-1 decision. The loss was the first of the’ season [for Orval Grove of Chicago. Blasting Murray Dickson and Ken Burkhart for six runs in the third inning, the New York Giants made it five straight victories over the St. Louis Cardinals by whipping the Redbirds at Sportsmans’ Park 6-4. Ron Northey hammered his fourth homer for the Cards. Short scores: American Leagtc R HE Chicago : S Boston Dbl Grove, Gebrian (4), Maltzberger (6) and Dickey; Dobson and Wag- ner. Sacramento tied it in the sixth on a walk and three singles, got two more in the seventh on Alex Kam- pouris’ homer, one in the eighth and three more in the ninth. Se- attle pitcher Sig Jakucki gave up five runs before he was relieved in the eighth by Pete Jonas, the lat- ter beng nicked for the final three runs.
