Rev. John B. Bentley, D.D., Bishop of Alaska, announces that he had accepted appointment by the Presiding Bishop as Vice- President of the National Council of the Episcopal Church. This ap- peintment elevates Bishop Bentley to a position as the second ranking prelate of the Anglican Communion in the United States. He has an- nounced his resignation as Bishop of Alaska and this will become ef- fective on December 31, 1947. The House of Bishops of the American Episcopal Church will meet in No- vember to select and consecrate a new Bishop for Alaska. Bishop Bentley came to Alaska in 1921 and was placed in charge of Christ Church at Anvik. Later he was appointed as Archdeacon of the Yukon which pesition he held until 1931 when he was consecrated as Suffragan Bishop of Alaska, a po- siticn equivalent to an assistant kishop, under the late Peter T. Rowe, first Bishop of Alaska. Upon Bishop Rowe's death in 1942, Bish- cp Bentley succeeded as Diocesan and his held that positicz ever since. D FIRE ALARMS The Juneau Volunteer Fire De- partment answered two alarms within fifteen minutes of each oth- er late yesterday. The first call, a 2-9 alarm, came at 4:45 p.m. for a blaze in a shack cn Deuglas Island not far from the bridge. Several volunteers cross- ed over to extinguish the fire which was apparently caused by a aulty fireplace. The other call, answered by re- 2 serves, came at 5 p.m. It was a 4-9 alarm in a house at the rear of the Niemi Apartments on Eighth Street.
