Tollefson (R-Wash), chairman of a House Merchant Marine and | Fisheries Subcommittee, asked the State Department today to give | careful attention to fishery industry problems in negotiating trade treaties. Tollefson said his committee on salt water fish was “gravely con- cerned” for the future welfare of the industry, after reading testi- mony taken in the trade treaty hearings. | Tollefson wrote the Department: “There is a possibility that fur- ther excessive reductions of tariffs or the elimination of import quo- tas on foreign fish might tend to V‘destruy some phases of the domes- | tic industry. } “The position of the fishing in- | dustry is critical; unwise agree- ments may threaten its very exist- ence.” | Tollefson said his committee did Inot intend to ta ny position on the merits or demerits of the reci- lprocal trade program, adding: “We only desire to respectfully |call your attention to the Presi- | dent’s executive order on reciprocal !n';xde procedures which in effect | requires you to make doubly sure that American interests be safe- | suarded.” ! - - | LUGGERS I'TENTION LUCGERS with logs 1 sale.
