The substitute was accepted in lieu of the original bill when Chairman Cochran explained hat the principal change made is ding appointive officials al- in ofiice. Under the provi- sicns of the substitute, they would |not be affected. Controversial Provision Senate Bill 40, which is expected to evoke considerable discussion, is a Walker measure amending the 11946 Veterans Act. The disputed | provision in the bill is new matter which would exempt from the one- half of one percent tax “any sale made to any person, firm or cor- poration engaged in business in the "hnx(m\ for resale to the residents and inhabitants thereof at retail and upon which the one percentumn gross revenue levied. .applies.” Purpose of the proposed change is to eliminate pyramiding o1 the ans Tax. The bill drew a “do pass” from Judiciary and is ready for tomorrow’s Senate calendar. S. Another amendment proposed by the Taxation Committee was adopted into another Walker mea- sure, S. B. 44, which is designed to increase the motor fuel tax. The bill would have raised the tax from cne cent to three cents per gallon The commitee amendment makes the incre frem one to two cents, and provides that the revenues go into a fund to be known the agen- “do a as the Highways, Harbors and Air- ficlds fund. It was stated that the present one-cent levy is returning the Tcrritory approximately $300,- D00 biennium. On Free Lisi S. B. 44 now goes to Finance Cun\» mittee with a “do pass” from Tax- on. Walker seconded the amend- ment to his bill S. B. 31, by Cochran, providing for a re-compilation of Alaska laws, came back from Judiciary with an tamendment attached and that amendment was adopted. It adds District Courts and Marshal’s to the list of those agencies and of- ficials entitled to free copies of the recempiled code. “Do pass” was the committee recommendation . Otherwise.
