A small town, a country fair, a shady nightclub are the settings for |“Whistle Stop.” A girl who is too | beautiful and too knowing; a ne'er- do-well with a pocket full of pride; the ruthless and wealthy owner of |the local nightclub; and a bartend- er with a disreputable past are the chief characters in this tale of love and violence. George Raft stars as Kenny Veech, the town loafer with a chip on his shoulder. He is in love with Mary, played by Ava Gardner. ,Runner-up in the triangle is Lew |Lentz, sophisticated and wealthy owner of the nightclub, the Flam- {ingo. | Mary, in love with Kenny, but | |resentful of his “the world owes Ime a living” attitude, does all her waltzing with Lew. Kenny, how- ever, is not stung into giving up |a pool table for an office desk. He merely gets sullen. And Lew, fur- 'jous at being thwarted by a lazy do-nothing, good-for-nothing, gets dangerous. The dynamite js fired by Lew's |bartender, Gitlo, played by Victor McLaglen. Gitlo is not an ordinary bartender. He is in debt to Lew for having pulled him out of a jam with ‘the police. Never allow- ed to forget his “obligation,” Git- lo's hatred boils higher and higher. A crony of Kenny's, Gitlo figures that to “liquidate” and rob Lew would solve everything for both himself and Kenny. He inveigles Ken into the plan, and the stnge is set for many thrilling c-ercs. e WEATHER CLOSES IN, BUT COASTAL COMPLETES TRIP Alaska Coasfal Airlines sent one Grumman off toward Ketchikan | vesterday.
