GOING AHEAD FAST Juneau’s mnew Salmon “Oreek Country Club, two-and-a-half miles out on ths Glacier Highway, i being pushed towards completion for a grand opening during No- vember, the date of which will bg announced in the near future. Kitchen and refrigerator equip- ment, which has been held up in Seattle because of the maritime strike, is now to be shipped North on small craft, thus breaking one of the main bottlenecks that had threatened to delay the opening. _The building is located off the Glacier road about 150 yards, and is an L-shaped structure in plan, with the bottom of the L parallel to the highway. The front of the building, which is in process of a complete remodeling, houses the large dining rcom and a good- sized hardwood dance floor. = At the south end of the room is to be a nine-foot natural stone| fireplace. The dining room is planned to seat 150 guests. At present in was necessary to install | a wood floor, but when matenals‘ are again available a hard rubber tile floor will replace it. At the north corner of the build-' ing is the kitchen, and next to it away from the highway is to be a new postwar refrigerator unit with more than 750 cubic feet of storage space, freeze cabinet. Behind will be restrooms. The remainder of the rear of the building is not being developed, but will eventually be remodeled into dining rooms for private parties. The building is air conditioned with a hot air system, and will have tubular colored lights for the dining room, which has windows taking the entire area of its front wall, giving a wide view across the highway and the channel to the mountains on Douglas Island. Landscaping | Lundscapmg of the grounds is being planned by a Seattle firm of landscape artists, and the ac- tual contract work will be done by a local contractor. Bulldozers will clear and level the land surround- ing the buildings, and remove a small hill from the area in front and slightly to the South. Instead of the present driveway from the highway, a road will be construct- ed to lead in from a point next to the Salmon Creek bridge, loop- ing around in front of the club- house for parking space. In the rear of the building the, trees close in quickly and climb steeply up the hills, Approximately 200 yards behind the clubhouse is a double falls, and it is planned to do sufficient clearing so that they will be visible from the front grounds and the road. Trails are also to be constructed, with picnic tables at various points in con- venient walking distance.
