In 1941, Juneau had its first Derby which was a tremendous success and Held sent the winner, Jerry Chapman, to Akron, Ohio to compete against winners from other states as well as Canada, Mexico and the Canal Zone. Unfortunately, the war has cancelled all races since 1941, and now the 5 Juneau Rotary Club and the Daily Alaska Empire take pleasure in presenting the Juneau Soap Box Derby for 1946. ’k Boys eligible to race must be between the ages of 9 to 15 inclusive, and must build the cars entirely by * themselves with materials not costing more than $10.00, including the standard wheels purchased especially for the race. The Juneau Derby is made up for three age groups. Class U are pboys 9 to 10 years old. Class B are boys 11 years old to 12 years inclusive, and Class A is made up of boys 13 to 15 years inclusive. Winners of Class A and B races will compete for the final race to decide who will compete at the national race held at Akron, Ohio during August.
