By BOB J. BURANDT Central Press Correspondent SEATTLE, Wash.—A revolu- tionary new “eggbeater” ship pro- peller, which will increase the ma- neuverability of ships to an almost unbelievable extent, as well as adding materially to their speed, has recently been successfully tested on the Navy's LSM 458 in Puget Sound waters. Known as the *“cycloidal peller,” the new invention, child of Prof. Frederick K. K sten of the University of Wash-| ington (who also designed a smok- ing pipe), has six vertical, pad- jdle-like blades jutting out from a ‘rotor set vertically in circular housings underneath the LSM's stern. With the phenomenal new pro- | peller, the LSM actually did a waltz on the ocean waves, moving sideways without ahead or astern movement. Pivots on Bow The the helmsman directed the thrust of the blades, she exe- cuted graceful dance-floor whirls, spinning completely around with- | out moving fore or aft, using her bow as a pivot. Ship ¢ beater ) conventional rudders and propel- | lers out the porthole, as they may | both steer and propel with the cycloidal unit. Use of the r d evice on ships will allow to dock under their own power and perform ma- | neuvers in close quarters which| would be impossible with a con-| ventional screw pro Rudder on equipped vessel is poorest is most needed coming in to a lar speed. A cycloidal-equipped sel, however, may use its power for any maneuver, w at slow speed or stationary. One of the greatest annoyance ship passengers, the; when the ship is ing under slow ve to tional screw propellers, paratus. Prof, Kirsten first pro- | brain- vibration | caused by churning of the conven- | gear, and e is elimi-| nated with use of the new ap- cycloidal propulsion in 1921, and nstalled his propeller on a 3&- foot speed boat. Tests were made at the Navy Towing Basin at Washington, D. C, and the Uni- | versity of Washington wind tun- nels, and scientific articles about the propeller were published in | technical magazines. But interest then subsided in the United States. However, the Voith-Schneider company, in Austria, began to ap- cycloidal propulsion to marine s as early as 1928. And in the United States govern- 1944, ment finally became interested and took steps which resulted in the recent tests. The cycloidal propeller was de- signed and built by the Pacific Car and Foundry company of Ren- ton, Wash, which holds an ex- clusive manufacturing license. engineer. Fach of the six vertical blades revolves on its own axis, as the twin rotors revolve. The rotors, circular steel housings flush with | the hull, are connected to the ve drive shaft with a right beveled gear drive. The propellers have an orbit meter of seven feet, and the are cast hollow manganese | bre The propeller rotor driven by a unique spiral gear drive also invented by Prof. | Kirsten, Pinion shaft is directly connect- | ed to the engine shaft by a flexible coupling, and consists of an inner | pinion integral with the shaft and | an outer pinion keyed to the shaft. | These two pinions on the same shaft drive two spiral bevel ring mounted om a common which in turn is keyed to 1d drives the rotor shaft. he blade. merchanism consi of a central control shaft which mounts the sun gear in the rotor| el's angle, |and is normally stationary except |when used for steering. Three| idler ge: sh with the two blade As the rotor lu1n~ the Prof. Kirsten acted as consulting | bevel | ts| blades revolve around their own axes at|ferries and all types of inland and conceived | one-half the rotor speed. ! —The Kirsten cycloidal propellers are shown, top phocc, in contrast with the old style twin-screw nranellers. The cycloidals have a horizontal rotary metion in contrast to vertical. Rotative motion ¢f the blades is |controlled so that each one pro- duces a useful thrust during prac- tically its entire revolution on its orbit. Necessity of a reverse gear, with its accompanying weight and cost, is eliminated, because the :loidal propeller thrust may be directed any direction radially outward from the propeller shaft. Thus the ship may be rapidly re- versed by turning the control! through 180 degrees without alter-, ing the direction of rotation of the rotor. Although the propeller some- what resembles an egg beater, the principle is wholly different in that the revolving blades push all the water in one direction; an egg beater throws fluids in two direc- tions. Conventional screw propeller ap- | pendages constitute a hull drag which sometimes exceeds 10 per cent of the total hull friction. No Hull Drag With cyeloidal propellers, this encumbrance is eliminated, resuit- ing in a clean, undisturbed fl along the hull bottom, which counts partly for the higher op- erating efficiencies, and further re- | duces cost of cycloidal ship hull construction. An important mechanical fea- ture of the cycloidal propeller is the accessibility of its blades without drydocking the ship. Blades may be removed or re- | placed while the ship is afloat. Even if all blades except one | were broken or swept away, a | cycloidal ship could still be kept |under contrel and propelled. If a | blade is bent, its effectiveness is | reduced, but propulsion is still | maintained, Trials of the cycloidal LSM 458 |will be compared with trials of LEM 147, a sister ship, which were conducted on the east coast. Use of the cycloidai propeller sun|will not be restricted exclusively h idler meshes with | to naval and military purposes, and should prove of great value also for tughboat, crane barges, river vessels. the route was a bug- | | eyed as though a circus had come to town Mr and Mrs Peterson who brougl ee children with them to homestead Anc uring 1 Ro- and WANT ADS ! | | | %I 4—H—H~ - il NOTICE OF MEARING ON | FINAL ACCOUNT In the Probate Court for the Tenl- FOR SALE tory of Alaska, Division Number = o One.
