Shellabarger, 23- year-old youtn who police said shot himself Satuiday in Denver rather than submit to questioning about a Fargo, N. D, shooting, is en- route from Alaska to claim the bedy, County Coroner Willlam O’Brien announced today. The Coroner had messaged to the Shellabarger family in Skwentna, Alaska, informing them that their scn’s body was being held at the County Morgue. The reply was from C. J. Shella- barger, the dead youth's father, who said he was leaving immed- iately. It was not indicated how soon he would arrive in Denver. Shellabarger was known at the University of Denver as an unas- suming wearer of the Congressional Medal of Honor, but the Navy De- partment in Washington said it had no record of his getting the award. The University of North Dakota remembered him as an ex-Marine Paratrcoper who was voted the out- standing member of the 1944-45 freshmen class. : Mrs. Ross Thomas, wife of a University of New Mexico profes- sor at Albuquerque, said he appear- ed to brood during his two and a half months at that school. He wis among a group cof students expelled from that school last year for a student escapade. “I am from the D. A’s office; we want to talk to you,” said Humph- reys as he and Ralph F. Croal, State’s Attorney for Cass County, N. D, met Shellabarger on the porch of his rooming house. \ At that, Humphreys said, Shel- labarger wrenched himself from the investigator's grasps and started running. Humphreys, Croal and twai other officers pursued him, firing | ope for a i as they ran. Although outdistanc- ing the officers, Humphreys sah:,*‘ Shellabarger shot himself in the head and died two hours later| | without regaining consclousness.
