With handsome and promising Hurd Hatfield (the rekel son of “Dragon Seed”) in the title role, en version of Oscar Wild ebrated story emerges the most unusual stor! WASSELL" IS HERE AT 20TH CENTURY Finding a dull moment in one of Cecil B. DeMille’s screen epics| is like finding a needle in a hay- stack and so it's expected that| Paramount’s “The Story of Dr.| Wassell” in Technicolor produced by DeMille, will be equally as exciting as his previous screen triumphs. | insiders say that "ThL-I Wassell,” arriving for the 20th Century | Theatre, overshadows any action | film to reach the screen thus far.| The reason is that the story based upon the incidents which ac ually happened to Comdr. Cory-! don M. Wassell, U. 8. N. and in turn were related by him and the wounded sailors whom he rescued from Java. | Playing the part of Commander Wassell is Gary Cooper while Lar- aine Day portrays the role of a nurse whose love for the doctor in- spires him to great deeds. The deep emotions displayed by these two, it is said, reach out to pull at the heart-strings of movie-goers. Oth- ers whose fine acting makes the vivid scenes as realistic as the act- ual incidents, it is reported, are Signe Hasso, as the Dutch nurse, Carol Thurston, as Tremartini, a native girl; Dennis O'Keefe, as Hoppy; Carl Esmond, a' Dutch of- ficer; Oliver Thorndike, Renny McEvoy, Melvin Francis, as wound- ed sailors. The story is one of an Arkansas doctor whose devotion to duty first brings him to China where he ad- ministers to its suffering millions. With the outbreak of war his Navy orders, read Java and he leaves for that base—he leaves also lovely Laraine Day, the nurse in China who inspired him to discover the germ striking down Chinese people. The parting scene, it's said, is one of the most tender moments of the picture, for Dr. Wassell sacri- ficed marriage to the nurse in the face of his call to duty. e —— - DRINK KING BLACK LAREL!
