TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1946 18 57 en —pE "NONE BUT THE LONELY HEART” 1S CAPITOL'S BILL The apparent hopelessness of fighting poverty is the bitter draught in the cup sipped by Ernie Mott in RKO Radio's new drama of life in London’s East End, “None But the Lonely Heart,” at the Capitol Thea- tre tonight. Cary Grant is starred in the role, as Ernie Mott, a shiftless cockney, and Ethel Barrymore is top- featured as his mother, Ma Mott. Giving up the struggle against the poverty and misery of his sur- roundings, Ernie drifts idly and aim- lessly through life, avoiding respon- cibility, taking his pleasure in a tawdry Fun House, and pursuing two romances Finally, *his SHOWPLALE oF mother throws him out, but then he learns that she is a) dying woman. This knowledge spurs him to desperate and illegal means of getting money to ease her remain- ing days. Finally he is able to sal- age something from the wreckage or ris life, and there is hope of an ultimate regeneration The drama is tense and exciting /hroughout, and is enhanced consid- erably reproductions of the dingy dives and hovels of London’s East End, with its interesting denizens. Heading the big supporting cast are Barry Fitzgerald, June Duprez, Jane Wyatt, George Coulouris, Ro- man Bokenen and Konstantin Shayne. David Hempstead produc- ed for RKO Radlo, and Clifford Odets, in addition to directing, wrote the screenplay, which was taken from Richard Llewellyn's best-selling novel. D Roberta Dooley; L.
