Ofter Trawls in Alaskan Waters Is Prefested by Fishermen, Boal Owners Fishermen and fishing boat | cowners are protesting vigorously to the proposed otter trawling on Alaska fishing grounds One of the first moves is taken by the Petersburg Fishermen and Vessel Owners Union The following radiogram from Petersburg objectors has been re- ceived by Ed Krause, Secreta of the Juneau Vessel Owners Associa- tion: “We earnestly request your im- mediate wired support and that of your Chamber of Commerce and City Council to the féllowing wire we have just sent to Dr. Ira Gabrielson, Chief of the Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior, Washington, D. C., and to Gov. Ernest Gruening and Dele- gate Bartlett: “‘We strongly request that otter trawling be entirely eliminated in Alaska for the following reasons: Records show destructive results to general ground fisheries on all _IIIIIIIIIIIIllllIIllliII|NIIIIIIIIIIIIII|l|lIIIIIIIIlIh"IIlIIlIIHI IIIIIIIIIIIIIlIIIIlIIIIIIlII|IIIIIIlIIIIIIIIII|IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIlIIIIIIN uml nlnn;, the aPcific and Atlantic seaboards. We are convinced of the otter trawls' destruction to the fisheries, disturbance of spawning grounds by the taking of large quantities of immature fish, clean- ing the bottoms of feed and green growth. All this is against con- servation. We request immediate action against the use of otter trawls in Alaska, including the continental shelf".” Krause said immediate action will be taken in Juneau in opposition to otter trawls.
