o af P SOUTHEAST PACK IS STILL OFF HALF MILLION CASES Western District Nefs But| 40 Percent of 1944 Catch Showing salmon = patk is Alaska’s still running a little more than 600,000 showing, | cases behind last yea according to pack records here by the Fish Service, through Aug. 25. Half a million cases of the de- crease is the result of the very poor season this year in Southeast s, compiled Alaska, where only the Ketchikan and Wrangell-Petersburg districts have equaled last year's totals over a comparative period. The catch in the Western District is revealed as only about 40 per cent of that of last year. Of the three major fishing areas, only Central Alaska has made a better pack this year than last, so far—and, that séction is now | closed except for fall seasons at| Copper River and Chignik.
