WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 1945 VETERANS' GUIDE By MAJOR THOMAS M. NIAL lorrrrrrrdree WASHINGTON — Letters from several veterans inguire about jobs with the Veterans' Administration. The pattern of my replies has been like this: “Jobs with the Veterans’ Admin- istration are controlled by the U. S. Civil Service Commission. That is where you should apply. The USCSC office is probably located in your post office building or in whatever fair-sized town is nearest to you. Look it up in the phone book. If you can’t find it, the .post office people will tell you where to go. “Tke Civil Seryice Commission should be able to give you a good line-up on open Veterans’ Adminis-, farming those acres and that you‘ will personally direct ahd operate that farm. Any bank or trust com- pany or the Farm Security Admin- | istration will give you helpful ad-| vice. If you just want the land as an addition to your property, you couldn’t quuliiy under the GI Bill pravisions.” The manager of the U. S. Emplo ment Service Office at Frederick, Mdr., writes me that this column much appreciated, is reliable and in-| formative, and that a scrap book with clippings of the articles is be- ing kept for reference. I replied: “I haven't made any tration jobs and their location, as serious errors yet in my column. But well as other suitable and available wait until I make a mistake or two government jobs. As a yeteran you and the screaming of the protes will get some preference. ,But re- I got will be heard as far away as member this — there are qualifica- Froderick, Md. They also know that a marricd man receives a living allow- ance of $75 per month. But they ray if the man works during his course of study or if his wife works, the amount either or both earned i3 deducted from that $75. Thus if the veteran’s wife works and earns $100 a month, he will receive no living allowance at all. Are the boys right in this interpretation of the, bill?” I answered: “I've talked with of-, ficials over at the V.A. and here is the correct answer. “If a veteran works full time while taking some course of education or training, he will get no subsistence allowance from the government. If he werks part-time while taking a full course his subsistence allowance won't be touched,. The amount he ¢arns part-time won't be deducted | from the subsistence allowance. If his wife works, her earnings do not affect the $75 subsistence allowed— there will be no deduction.” A veteran in Florida tells me he has a home on an acre of ground. “Adjoining my acre,” he writes, “are 46 acres I would like very much to cwn. Can I do so under. the GI/ Bill and what steps should I take?” T'told him: “You can borrow money under the GI Bill loan-plan to buy those 46 acres if you are going to farm them.
