It is right no how- , that we have with us the best regation of athletes in our his- We refer to the U. S. Army Bas- ketball team from Port Edward, B. C. These fellows are enjoying a brief furlough in Juneau, enroute south after their strenuous weeks in Anchorage and the Aleutians. They beat the best teams from all over Southeast Alaska and the mainland, taking the area\cham- pienship in Anchorage and winning the right to meet the Aleutian titleholders for the all-Alaskan Service Teams Championst? Travelling out to Adak, they lost two of the three games played there in a hotly-contested series with a Negro team representine the Novy, Fine athletes and good fellows, these soldiers already have Lii . « lot of new friends here. Undoubt- edly they will add many more to their admirers on Saturday night when they meet a local team in an exhibition game for the benefit of the Red Cross. Their team is led by its Center, Stanley Ketchmark, of Aurora, Illi- nois, a brilliant basketball player and all-around athlete and, inci- dentally, a likely-looking prospect for the infield of the Chicago White Sox after the war. His teammates on Saturday will be selected from the following: Harold Hensen, Val- paraiso, Indiana; /Charles Horn, York, Pennsylvania; Paul Manson, Orrville, Ohio; John Moline, Willi- ston, North Dakota, William “hompson, Sandusky, O., and For- rest Southworth, Reading, Pa. Capt. Charles Peake, of Columbus, Ohio, is the Army officer in charge of the group. Details of Saturday's benefit game will appear in the Empire tomorrow. Watch for them. And don't miss seeing in action this team that was runner-up for the {championship of all of Alaska. There is every reason to rate ite the best team ever to appear in Juneau. * o o SUNDAYS AT TEN Sunday nights at the club have been traditionally on the quiet side. After rather busy Saturday nights |in some cases rather strenuous |Saturday nights, indeed), it has |seemed to meet with general ap- |proval {1zed programs in the clubhouse on |the following night. Casual reading, |letter writing, and listening to the Juke box or to the informal singing |around the piano has appeared to be about as strenuous an activity as anyone cared for. We've tried to |accede to this general preference. Two Sundays ago, however, when we scheduled Senator Frank Whaley with his fine movies, we overed that everyone was de- ‘Ihglued. Both the size of the crowd jand its enthusiasm convinced us that if the entertainment was really |good, late Sunday night was likely to prove an ideal time for its | presentation. Accordingly, it's been decided that |for ‘the next several weeks (at least) we'll continue to present these special USO Sunday night features at 10 «o'clock. 8p. m,| P.
