This is number thirty-two of a series. SCHENLEY INTERNATIONAL CORP., NEW YORK News Out of India Foreign news dispatches tell us that the Madras Government in India has suspended the Prohibi- tion Act. It was enacted in 1939, and it prohibited the sale and con- sumption of intoxicating liquors in ! four important provinces. No, we didn’t gloat with glee be- cause we have a job with a distill- ery, but we dug-in to find out why the Madras Government suspenided i the Act, and-—got the answer. Pro- hibition in Madras created a steady Jincrease in illegal distillation, ac- companied by many of the well- i known offenses. Penalties did not curb violations. The Government also discovered that badly needed war funds went elsewhere instead of into its coffers. So, on January {1, 1944, legal liquor shops were re- ‘opened in the four districts where, Isince 1939, Prohibition did not | prohibit. ' We believe that the average man | and woman really views the subject | | as not being a question of wet and dry, but rather as a question of legal and illegal liquor. And, surely, | if one is not entirely satisfied with | ' the experience in the United States, one can gather a lot of corrobora- | tive evidence from other countries, | namely, Russia, Sweden, Norway | and Finland. And then add the Canadian Provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, l?luebec and Saskatchewan. All these have experimented with Pro- hibitionand all of them have found the experiment ‘‘ignoble.” Color, race, creed, and geography | don’t seem to make much differ- ence. We ought to learn something from that and profit from our learn- ing. Some sage once said, “"There are three kinds of men, the wise, the part-wise and the unwise. The unwise man never learns anything; own experiences; the wise man learns from the experiences of others.” MARK MERIT ©fSCHENLEY INTERNATIONALCORP. ARMY AIR CORPS During the past several months many more men of the Army Air |Corps have visited our club than | |previously. It's been a very enjoy- |able personal experience to get to |know this fine group of men. And |it’s been good to feel that the USO has contributed at least something |to their richly-deserved and hard- learned furloughs. | scme of these fellows have been {here before, but the big majority |have been enjoying their first fur- {loughs in many months. Though a few have come in from the north, almost all are stationed in the | far-Aleutians. By now it's hardly news that {flying conditions out there are ex- tremely hazardous. Our friends |never seem to complain—but they realize they are lucky to be alive after months of operations from those fog-enshrouded islands. One |8rcup of recent visitors to the club have completed more than 20 mis- isions over enemy territory. Need- ilnss to say, they've had their share of close calls! Some o1 the men have seen ac- |tion In other battle areas, too. {We've felt especially privileged lately to play host, for example, |to one lad who wears the Air Corps Medal and who has experi- |enced more than 400 hours of combat flying over England, Africa, Italy and France, and against the Japanese. Each time we say goodby we have our fingers crossed. It doesn't always work. One Saturday even- ing last summer we met a very friendly sergeant, urged him to at- tend the USO dance that night. He accepted, seemed to have a fine time, was well liked by all who imet him. The fellowing Monday he |was back in action, By the end of |the week he was brought down at sea by enemy fire. Before rescuers could reach the floating plane, he and his mates had frozen to death Some fellows are almost uribe- lievably fortunate. One night in April we sat at the club with two Air Corps men, drinking coffee and talking until early morning. “Good- by and good luck!” of course, was our farewell to them. Just this week we've learned from one of this ‘pnh' that the other had the BEST |of good luck—and had needed it, |too. “Recall,” we were reminded “'hcw comfortable you and .Smitty {and I were sitting over there on |that big divan “that night?” We | THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE—JUNEAU, ALASKA BE AN INSISTER, MISTER!
