NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC Two weeks ago the Junean and Douglas meat dealers were obliged to discontinue the sale of beef for reasons’stated:in the Notice published at that time. On November 7th, application was made to the OPA for a revision of its schedules put into effect on that date so as to permit the dealers to continue the sales of beef on a rea- sonable basis which would assure us the margin of profit necessary to operate. We have continued fo keep open our stores since November 7th in order fo supply the public with other kinds of meat, but we find it impossible to continue to operate on these types of meat alone, and, therefore, all meat dealers in Juneau and Douglas have decided to close our doors completely af the close of business on Wednesday, November 22nd. All stores will be open Wednesday until 5 :30 P M. We exceedingly regret the necessity of, thls step, and we certainly would not dis- continue our business if we could operate without a loss. We have asked the OPA to ar- range for what is known as a cutting test on a side of beef, and we have agreed to abide by the resulis obtained by them, allowing us the same margin which we have had heretofore over the cost prices. This test will now be made, and if relief is obtained, -all stores will be opened. As the matter now stands, we face a loss either way, for if we remain closed for any length of time, we lose our investments in property and equipment, and if we continue 1o operate We have received telegraphic communications from meat dealers in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Sitka, Kodiak, Skagway, Wrangell, Petersburg, Nome and Cordova stating that the new beef schedules as applied to those towns have the same effect there as the Juneau schedules and that objections are being filed with the OPA.
