Also it was found that some areas that had ! |been needing service but had not {had it should be provided for. | Travel Over Highways | James H. Stone, recently appoint- |ed Senior Sanitarian with the de- |partment, also made the trip, to ;become acquainted with the country and its people in regard to his work, |in heaith education and sanitation. | From Whitehorse Dr. Hays and IMr Stone made the trip by auto- Hnohue over the Alaska Highway to | Fairbanks and over the Steese High- 1way to Circle. Mrs. Hays leit the | party at Whitehorse and made the | trip down the Yukon River to Circle, |on the last steamer before the close of navigation on the river. Return- |ing south, the party made the trip, from Fairbanks to Valdez over the Richardson Highway. | Nursing Service Planned | ~As a result of the Steese Highway | observations, periodic nursing service |is being planned for the three areas | previously neglected, Circle Hot | Springs, Circle and Eagle, Dr. Hays said. On the Richardson Highway be- Itween Big Delta and Valdez it was | found desirable that itinerant nurs- |ing service be established for the lower part of the Richardson, in- the branch highways to Chitina and a portion of the new Toq cut-off. It was also found that |there is a need for nursing service for Valdez, which is isolated from | the north because of the closing of the road during the winter months. In accordance with these observa- itions a nurse is soon to be estab- lished in Valdez. Health Problems In the visits to the larger centers, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Palmer and | Seward, Dr. Hays found that the | Health Councils, as well as many other citizens, were becoming more definitely (pncerned with local rhealth problems as well as the prob- lems of the Territoy as a whole, and desiring to do more about them. |Mr. Stone met with a number of Health Councils and was of assist- ance in discussing their educational and sanitary programs. A number of Native villages were ' visited and discussions were had with both Territorial and Indian Service teachers, most of whom | seem to be concerned with the health conditions of their charges cand desirous of more and better | health services. | Praises Alaska’s Highways | The Alaska portion of the Alaska Highway as well as all other high- | ways traversed in the Territory, were in excellent condition with the ex- ception of places where new portions | | were being built, according to Dr.| | Hays. But no serious dlmcumeSr |were encountered anywhere. The new Glenn Allen Highway between! Copper Center and Anchorage was | sald to be one of the most beau- imul and scenic roads on the entire trip. l Dr. Hays was high in praise of the ! | efficiency of the Alaska Road Com- | mission. “The camps were clean| ; and orderly, and every representative [ was found to be courteous and de- sirous of giving any help needed | | | | | 1 | | | I | L. On their trip over the highway they observed game of all kinds including | bear mountain sheep, mountain goats and various game birds. | Snowstorm Some rain was encountered along | the Steese and Richardson highways | and the party was overtaken by a | snowstorm in the Valdez area but most of the trip was made in beau- | tiful weather.
