Nevertheless they slid into first place in the American League as Detroit took a 16-inning thriller from the New York Yankees by a score of 4 to 3. In the National League the Card- inals kept serenely on top by a' comi- fortable margin. Detroit made a clean sweep of the four-game series from the Yankees. A double by Don Ross scored Jimmy Outlaw with the win- ning run with two out in the 16th frame. Hal Newhouser entered the game in the ninth. The Browns, although defeated by the Senators, left the St. Louis club two percentage points better than the slumping world GUARANTEED champions. George Metkovich smacked a 3- run homer with two out in the ninth inning yesterday to give the Boston Red Sox a 7-8 triumph over Cleve- land. The game was Boston’s only win in the four-game series. The Cards Braves 4-2. George Munger hurled eight in- nings for Boston against Cleve- land, allowing only three hits, then left the game because of a split finger and Fred Schmidt relieved | 2im and held the tribe to one hit or the rest of the game. refer-| ences, age, experience.
