"I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE” “ALL BY MYSELF" THE CAPITOL HAS THE BIG PICTURES! HOSPITAL NOTES Mrs. Tauno Niemi and baby THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE— |"HIT THE ICE" | OPENS SUNDAY, - CAPITOL SHOW | Abbott and Costello, the nation's {No. 1 laugh makers, come tomorrow |to the Capitol Theatre in Univer- ,sal's newest comedy production, |“Hit the Ice.” Heralded as their |funniest picture since “Buck Pri- {vates,” the current film is declared to present Bud and Lou in a series of hilarious situations developed to jexploit the mirth-making talents of the two famous comics. | Ginny Simms, popular radio per- sonality, has the leading feminine role and the supporting cast fea- tures Patric Knowles, Elyse Knox and Marc Lawrence. Elaborate musical sequences present the well known Johnny Long and his or- chestra. Other popular entertainers are Helen Long, Gene Williams, the Four Teens and 50 skating beau- ties. i) The story of “Hit the Ice,” de- scribed as action-loaded, reveals Bud and Lou as candid camera photographers who find themselves implicated in a bank robbery. Pos- sessing negatives which identify the robbers, the boys are chased by the crooks and eventually captured in a mountain resort hideout. This is where much of the exciting fun- action is enacted and the ultimate “table-turning” is said to be photo- graphically spectacular as well as comical. Romance is included, too. Knowles and Miss Knox are the headliners in this department, while Costello, and Ginny Simms also “carry on” with surprising results. The picture features a brilliant cast made up of Barbara Stanwyck, George Brent, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Nancy Coleman ‘and a fine new- jcomer for whom film critics and |preview audiences alike predict a bright future, Gig Young. The story is adapted from the best-selling novel by Stephen Long- street, whose powerful writing was transplanted in all its strength from print to film. The three Gaylord sisters (nicknamed the ‘Gay Sisters’ by the press) Fiona, Lady Burton and Susanna, played respectively by Barbara Stanwyck, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Nancy Coleman, are theoretically worth a fortune but are actually up to their necks in debt. Irving Rapper directed the film which was written by Lenore Cof- “lee, The excellent supporting cast |ls mede up of such Hollywood fa- jvorites as Donald Crisp, Gene Lock- hart, Larry Simms and Donald Woods. The fine musical back- \8round was written by the incom- (parable Max Steiner. LENS GRINDII]G* .
