MEEI port on New Off- Season Fishing Carl Wiedman Gives Re-' Carl Wiedman, Juneau fisherman, spoke at the Chamber of Commerce this noon in the Gold Room of the Baranof H on the merits of ‘otter trawlini s A new off-season fishing industry for Juneau, and described a prospect trip which he and Emil Vienola of this city made in an. otter trawler chikan Wiedman said that the methed could ‘'be used to good advantaze only in areas where the ocean hot- tom was not rocky because the net is dragged on the bottom to provide a haul of bottom fish—sole, flound- er, prawn and others. In the test run from Ketchikan, he said, a huge prawn was broughtt up—as large as any he had seen. The fishermen ccoked and ate some of them and found them to be of very high quality. The boat used out of XKet- was a 70-foot vessel with a 100 hp Diesel engine. Use Larger Boats Wiedman suggested that the larg~ er boats would be more adaptable to other trawling than small boats and also named several areas near Juneau which would make good trawling grounds. He said that the plan does not advocate the taking of halibut be- cause that is a separate industry. Cost of changing a boat over for otter trawling, he estimated, would be about $2500 for a 70-foot boat, including al!l equipment, and $1500 for smaller boats. Cost of the net used is $250 in Seattle Earl N. Ohmer, of Petersburg, said that fishermen of that district have been using beam trawling for 30 years, a method similar to this but a system which can be used the bottom is rough and rocky.
