The radio cfficer aboard the boat managed to get off one distress and this was picked up by a Coast Guard radio station which quickly spread ‘the alarm. The men were before the Stormy Petrel, Capt. Jack Westfall, arrived on the scene and picked them up. The Stormy Petrel stood by for an hour in an jattempt to salvage the craft but was prevented from taking action due to the intensity of the fire. A short time later a Coast Guard boat arrived at the scene, brought the flames under control, but the sutted vessel foundered and sank in deep water while being towed to the beach. The Prince of Wales was a well- known craft in Southeast Alaska. About 20 years ago the little vessel served out of Ketchikan operating to Hyder and also to west coast ports with mail and freight. Dr. L. P. Dawes of Juneau purchased and remodeled the vessel and for sears it was operatéd off and on ut of Juneau.
