This drawing tells as much of the “secret” as can be revealed. The new “night flare” was first tried out over Hamburg, but was perfected for the Berlin attack. The pro- cedure is something like this: Pathfinders chart areas covering a few miles. As the bombers approach, the flares are dropped, creating squares and rings of light about doomed areas. Other flares act as great flood- Jights, which cause targets to stand out clearly.
