PAGE SIX EUGENE WALLIS Editor THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE—JUNEAU, ALASKA —————————————————————————————————————————————— I ——— e T —— WHAT SITKA NEEDS ... SOCIETY 7AND CLUBS . PAVED STREETS SMALL BOAT HARBOR LIBRARY COMMUNITY CENTER Speaking of community centers reminds us of the USO drive which we of this column just recently completed. We found the average Sitkan anxious to cooperate with USO in every way. They have dug down in their pockets and come out with $564.50 to date, with the remaining $34.50 pledged This amount will be collected and deposited o the credit of this week. USO has never publicized here and many folk here- about knew very little about it or what it stands for. But all were willing to contribute when it was explained to them. We are very happy about the whole thing, es- pecially the ready response of the citizens with their cash money - very USO CAMPAIGN A SUCCESS The drive to collect $600 here for USO which this writer started several days ago, is a success and the lagg part of the $600 is now reposing securely in the First Bank of Sitka. We have a few more col- lections to make on unpaid pledges which will bring us up to the $600 mark. This means that our job is done and now it is up to USO The following letter is self ex- planatory: Thank you for your airmail let- ter (postmarked June 8) received this morning ‘We sincerely appreciate your splendid activities and are pleased to learn that you have raised to date almost your complete quota of $600. You have both our appre- ciation and congratulations We are sending you by mail the supplies you request, and can send you further supplies of terial should you need them. I am sending a coyp of your letter to Mr. Robert E. Strawbridge, Jr., of our Overseas Department in New York, who will be pleased, as we are, to hear of your activities to service men in the way of hospi- tality and morale building Our thoughts are a great deal with you these days in Alaska, and our Overseas Department, I know, will give you willing cooperation as Alaska is one of their territorial responsibilities. When you have completed your campaign and wish to make remit- tance, it may be forwarded to this office. Kind regards, Yours sincerely, (Signed) J. Henry Lang, Pacific Coast Special Representa- tive. - e ~ AMERICAN LEGION MEETS The regular weekly meeting of Post 13 of the American Legion was held Tuesday evening June 23rd at the Castle, Charles Whitt- more Post Commander presided SEE US TODAY- FATHER'S DAY CELEBRATION Quite a | number of Legion- naires of Post 13 were guests of the Officers and Men of Fort Ray last Sunday at a Father's Day service conducted by Chaplain Culpepper The Chaplain paid a glowing tribute to the Legion for the untiring forts of its members in keeping the ever important event—Father's Day. The text of the sermon was Faith With Our Fathers” and of course the ever beautiful story “the return of the Prodigal Son” w dwelt on at some leng! together with the story of Josept ojourn in Egypt and those of you that have been fortunate enough to hear this fellow Culpepper, know what I mean when I say that everyone present enjoyed the Service very much WEDDINGS There comes time in the life of cvery newspaper man (alleged or otherwise) when he is called upon to paint his readers (both of them) a word picture of a wedding join- ing together two of his very good friends in holy matricony. This is a very tough job, especially as we were not present & the said wedding. However, we are going to do our very best from the in- formation given us by our rep- resentative who was there. This | wedding was the highlight of the | social season and one we had sol- | emnly promised to attend but other matters made our going im- possible. We have been personally ac- quainted with the groom for a| long time and know none better. We were among the first to shake | his hand upon his arrival in Al- ‘n.xk:\—momh,x ago. We have had ‘lnm in our home as a guest, have | worked day after day beside him, prove their mettle. We are also weil | acquainted with the bride of this happy union and if the “stars ever presaged” good fortume for any young couple starting out in life— it is these two—may we say “Good |Luck and happy landings and all that stuff. And may God bless you both, Jack McConkey and Elaine Peterson.” TEX. .- JULY FOURTH CELEBRATION Arrangements are under way for a Fourth of July celebration to be held here, the various committees o already been selected and gun to function. A wide | variety of worthwhile entertainment is promised. We might add that | Col. Copeland has promised us the |use of the best military band in | Alaska for this date and the | wholehearted cooperation of the | Army in helping us to make this event a successful one—We are | sure we speak for all Sitkans, when | We say that we never grow tired of | listening to this wonderful band. How did they spend their time on this glor- jous date? Why, by going to two weddings of course. ———————— EMBARRASSING E TS T brings us to a rather el ba ng question, which concerns Sitkans only—what about the use of our High School Auditorium? . What was it built for? Was it built for use in peacetime by a select group? Or was it put there for the of all the people? We are at even though some of our cit- izens refuse to recognize the fact. We have been offered the use of the best military band in Alaska to assist us in a Bond Campaign here. You all know we have a cer- tain bond quota for each month, July's being $40,000. WE HAVE TO SELL THESE BONDS—With the cooperation of this wonderful Band we can do ii easily—but we must have the auditorium in which to conduct these concerts.
