On his own campus the presi- dent of Stanford University already is supervising $100,000 worth of: highly secretive wartime research and hgads a commission of colleges which have recently dropped some longstanding traditions to concen- trate on the job of fighting. Asserting that the nation “is in danger of losing a college genera- tion,” educators of the Ninth Corps| Area have drawn up a comprehen- sive program of wartime coopera- tion with the military. It includes running on a contin- speeding up education of students; birthday and consequent draft liability. It also eliminates the summer vacation. More college military and avia- tion training, use of campus fa- tilities by Army, Navy and civilian | defense, and shaping of study courses to aid the war program are all colunteered. | In return, the colleges ask gov- ernment suport for students train- ing for highly technical jobs, and draft deferment for the men com-| petene to teach them. The war’s drain on a university's human resources is exemplified at| Stanford, where one-third of the time of the chemistry professors is | devoted to war research. In ad-| dition, nearly 50 professors are on | leave of absence for scientific war| Jjobs. | O It is estimated that one out of every 1,000 persons in the U.
