Invented by Donald Roebling of Clearwater, Fla, and manufactured at Lakeland, Fla., the Marines claim they can go anywhere a land tank can go and are easily handled in mud and water. Each tank can carry 40 men. WANDERERS { STRANDED AFTER TRIP neau After Petersburg Rejects Them ; Flat broke and a bit on the skinny F. H. Pencovic of the Uni- burg was in town today wondlering what he and his five companions are going to do next. Dr. Pencovic is the man who led a party of five, not counting the guide, whom Dr. Pencovic doesn’t, from Hazelton, B. C., to Telegraph Creek through 44 days of devil clubs, mus- keg and mountain passes. He put his automobile in hock in Hazelton to obtain six horses, sup- | plies and equipment; he put his two best word to describe how Beirnes and Pencovic passed the trail time. Anyway, after much discussion by ) radio and telegram as to who should move the stranded travellers from Telegraph Creek, the river boatman, Hill Barrington, gave the group a 'free ride to Wrangell down the Sti- kine River. After Pencovic and Griffith earned a little money as lahorers, they moved the party board the steamer Yukon. “And that was the best food we ever tasted,” Pgncovic grinned, ob- viously enjoying the memory. “Peo- ple were grand to us aboard the boat and the ship’s officers did every- thing to make us comfortable.” “Keep Moving” At Petersburg, the town officials decided the Pencovic company should go right on being comfort- able, or at least, go right on. The city clerk told them to get back on the boat, in a hurry. They did. They landed here. They're still here. They haven't any money and they don't know what they're going to do next. But they don't seem too worried | about it. Their leader grew a beard | on the trail, swore not to cut it until | he reached Skagway, their original | destination. i | “Itll be down to here,” he said, | marking a spot on his shirt, “be- | fore we get to Skagway. We want | | to go back to the States.” Meanwhile, their hotel bill is going up. Welfare officals provided meals for them yesterday; an official of a {rellef organization intimated none of them would be allowed to starve SAM FELDON RETURNS Sam Feldon returned from the south on the Alaska. He went to the States on business and then had an unexpected reunion with his sis- ter in California and a brother, who is on a British war vessel at a Cali- rorma pon undergomg repairs. Dr. Pencovic doesn’t believe in guns or in killing life, so there was no gun with which to bag game. “It was four days before we ar- $ rived in Telegraph Creek and we were plenty hungry,” Dr. Pencovic declared. “I wouldn’t do it again for $10.- 000,” said his blonde wife. “It wasn't | worth it.” | “Yes it was!” contradicted the | philosopher. i “Yes, it was,” declared Mrs. Pen-, covic, remembering she was talking to a newsman.
