Before this war is over you will have paid out so many pennies that the mere mention of a game lof penny-ante poker will cause your face to whiten. Every time you buy a phono- graph record or a pack of cards or a glass of wine now you will throw in a few extra penhies to help pay for a two-ocean navy, a drafted army, and a super air force. These pennies will be taken from you largely in the form of hidden taxes, so-called because purchased article. But look sharply and you'll get an idea of the wallop the new hidden taxes can hand out. Let's say it's your oirthday and you and the wife and another couple are going to have a big time of it. First you'll have cock- tails, then a show, and you in- tend to wind up the evening in a pocktail lounge or night club. You buy a quart for the cock- tails and after paying the price of the liquor you add $1.00 for Uncle Sam. Then you go to a show which ple you throw in an additional $120 for the government. Then to the night club, and when you {pay the $20 bill another dol has to be thrown in for the littie man who isn’t there. That means you've paid $3.20 during the evening in hidden taxes. Remember when $3.20 | would feed you and the wife for half a week? Somebody Has To Pay Suppose you're going out witn the boys for an evening, to bow!l or go to the amusement park, or drop in at some favorite place. Well, the bowling alley pro- prietor has to pay the govern- ment a tax of $10 per alley. Thal means he probably will charge the customers more to make up the difference. At the amusement park you'll have to pay a penry for every five-cent sideshow or any other amusement. When you drop into Joe’s you find he to pay Uncle Sam $50 a year just to have a slot machine in the room.
