TONIGHT in the background of almost all\ the movie sword fights since 1925.| He has trained stars, featured players, and several thousands of bit players and extras in the fund- amentals of sword play. He likes to think that, in a modest way, he has had something to do with re- viving fencing in America. When | he started making film thrills only a few amateures in the east prac- ticed the sport, whereas now the colleges go for fencing teams. The screen did it, he believes, | It would cost you about $25,000 \m tuition fees and about five years |of your life to become an expert ‘swoldsnmn (and wow your friends) but if you'll compromise there are tricks that can be had for less. Ifj you're interested in a rapler fight| | with an opponent, say, it's only $60 and you add $15 for each extra op- ponent. Rapier play, hanging from a chandelier, is a bit steeper—$200 —but at $7 the art of sabering a fleeing enemy (which is nice of the enemy flees) is a gift. Personally, I'm saving up $10 because for that Cavens will teach anyone how to ewer a bit player, and I know everal bit players whose work might be improved by a little skew- jering. Only the blood-thirsty (and | the movies) would be interested in Cavens’ $500-up item: massacres. ———.——— ‘BonVoyage Wishes Extended Hagertys A number of friends gathered at yage to Mrs. D. W. Goldwyn's “The Westerner,” the new film produqubn starring Gary | Cooper and closing tonight at the | Capitol Theatre, is a saloon of the 1880 vintage. It is plainly a dive— a replica of that infamous liquo: dispensary in which Judge Roy Bean of Texas held his court and ruled as the sole law west of the Pecos. In this saloon important histori- cal events transpire, with Walter Brennan, impersonating Judge Bean, and Gary Cooper starring in the role of a stranger who defends the right of homesteaders to settle down upon and cultivate the free range. Other top-notch performances are turned in by Doris Davenport as the daughter of a hardened pio- neer, Lilian Bond as the glamor- ous and alluring Lily Langtry, Fred Stone as a homesteader, and Forrest Tucker as the other man. “The Westerner” was filmed by Samuel Goldwyn to give discrim- inating moviegoers the kind of picture that has everything—pic- torial beauty and sweep, unforget- table romance, punchy drama, and above all, crackerjack entertain- ment. MODEL PLANE MEET WILL BE IN NOV. 21 Boys Ar;N—ow Building Planes-Others May Enter Contest Model airplane builders in Ju- neau are going to have a sweep- stakes prize and 14 minor awards to aim at when the Rotary club stages the city’s first model planes meet here in early November, it was announced today. Just what the prizes will be is yet to be announced, but if sug- gestions for awards are any indi- cation, the sweepstakes prize will really be something worth the best efforts of local boys who build planes. Already, 27 boys have signified their intention of competing foc the awards, according to Harold Roth, chairman of the Rotary com- mittee in charge of the event. Planes all the way from six-foot gasoline models to small table models, meant for display and not flight, are in progress among the young plane builders, he said. At the Rotary luticheon meeting today, members drew names out of the hat, with the purpose of each contestant 'being sponsored by a club member. Lists of contestants who have declared they would build planes, along with the Rotarian sponsoring each boy will be pub- lished in the Empire ‘sometime this week, Judges for the meet, Roth said, will be local aviation experts and actual pilots.
