The mates and the captain of the vessel stood pat on their decision and the ship was tied up for over 40 hours loaded with government equipment and dynamite for air- base construction at Nabesna and Boundary. Base workers threatened to remove the machinery if the sea- men didn’t, tractors and carry-alls were unload- ed and started over the Richardson Highway for Nabesna before the strike was called. A time limit and a short working season made the receipt of the machinery and equipment by Mor- rison and Knudsen vital. Major B. B. Talley of Elmendorf Field who is in charge of airbase construction in the Territory, flew into Valdez early yesterday afternoon on small boat harbor business. When he learned of the strike he interviewed the captain of the Oduna immed- iately. The frieighter sailed at 7 o'clock last night. JEWELL TO TRAVEL Assistant Executive Officer Homer W. Jewell of the Alaska Game Commission will leave tomorrow by plane for Fairbanks to spend a month in the Interior visiting vari- ous points with Wildlife Agents. DOUGLAS NEWS GUARDS DRILL TONIGHT Douglas “Home Guard” boys will drill as usual this evening on the ball grounds. CEP W T PFEIFFER ENROUTE NORTH Otto Pfeiffer was a through-the- channel passenger aboard the Prin- cess Charlotte last evening, being transferred from Vancouver, B. C., to military duty at some point north by the Canadian government. Dur- ing the four-hour stay of his port in port, Pfciffer enjoyed a visit with ! his wife and boy here, LEAVING ON CHARLOTTE Pioneer John King, who has been enjoying his first visit here in 20 years, expects to leave on the Prin- cess Charlotte Friday morning for his home in Eeattle.
