Whales Are Scarce, So Are Whalers WASHINGTON, May >.--Twen. | tieth Century Moby Dicks will sail | soon to whaling grounds off the California coast to bring back prod- ucts for perfume, soap, and cat and dog food. Only one San Francisco company is left of the great whaling outfits that helped make the American whaling fleet the largest in the world a century ago. Only other company in North America is Can- adian. The world catch last year was about 35,000, including holes taken from the Antarctic by English, Nor- wegian and Japanese whalers. But whales are heing caught too fast, according to Dr. Remington Kellogg, of the United States National Mu- seum, who fears that some species will soon be extinct. Biggest use of whale fat in this country is for soap. It also goes into perfume, face creams, sprays for fruit trees and flies and lubri- cants. Germany uses whale fat for lard. Japan eats whale meat, but this country uses the meat only for cats and dogs, according to the United States Department of Interior fish and wildlife service.
