I THOUGHT BUT ITLL BE MAILED ON TIME, DON'T OF THAT, Too- By CLIFF STERRETT Win, lose or draw, the Evzones, Greece's famous mountain troops, who can right- ly claim the lion’s share in t! rout of the Italian forces in Greece, have long been among the crdck units of the Greek army. I'hey won their first laurels during the Greek War of Inde- pendence against Turkey (1821- 32.) During the Balkan Wars of 1912:13 they likewise excelled in courage and daring. Thus their exploits in the present conflict with I(aly are merely another chapter in the extraordinary kis- tory of these colorful mountain fighters. The Evzone regiments are re- cruited from the mountaineers of northern and central Greece. They are descendants of peas- ants who settled in the Pindus and Epirus Mountains, prefer- ring the hard and dangerous mountain life to the oppressive rule of their Turkish overlords. The individualistic spirit of their forefathers still lives on in the Evzones. Although there are five Evzone regimoms with about 15,000 men in the Greek army, they seldom fight in large units. Rather, they harass the enemy by guerilla warfare, llghtmg in groups of ten or a water pump a well pip2, Re- away, the not one a D of some distance MINING LAWS (FEDERAL and TERRITORIAL) LODE, PLACER, OIL and COAL LOCATIONS WATER RIGHTS, MILL SITE and TUNNELS twelve. Death means little to these men who face it all their | lives. Reckless-and relentless, they perform deeds of extra- ordinary daring. In the second Balkan War, two Evzone brothers overwhelmed single- handed a Bulgarian battery manned by thirty soldiers, and this was but one of many simi- lar exploits. Clothes and equipment of the Evzones are adapted to the par- ticular requirements of moun- tain warfare. Evzones wear kilts, called fustanellas, the garb of all Greek mountaineers, and under it a close-fitting white hose. To the latter they owe their name, for Evzone means well-girdled. Fustanellas and hose are an effective protection against the dense underbrush which covers the slopes of the Pindus Mountains. The shoes of the Evzones are | long, heelless pumps with turn- ed-up points. As these points bend back, the shoes are very springy and therefora extreme- ly practical for mountain-elimb- ing. A white baggy shirt, a clocvelcss, tunic and a fezlike cap com- plete the uniform. His kit consists of nothing more than a blanket, haversack, segulaticns foibil the iinging ¢f chusch bells i land except to signal th ¢f the war or a German land- ing. Juneau Alaska richly embroldered | saucepan and water bottle. ‘In order not to impede his mobility, he can carry with him only very small rations. If these are ex- hausted, he often subsists on raw meat. The only weapons of the Ev- zones are rifle and bayonet. With' hand-to-hand fighting their favorite method of attack, the latter is of special importance. In every war, the Evzones are entrusted with missions which require particul>= skill and courage. They aie always the first to attack and the last to withdraw. In the present war, they covered the retreat of the Greek forces during the first days -of the Italian invasion, then formed the vanguard of the troops which drove the Fascists back into Albania. Greece knows well how much she owes to the daring and en- durance of these mountain troops. After the Balkan Wars, King George I openly acknowl- edged the exceptional position of the Evzones by introducing the practice of recruiting the Royal Guard exclusively from vzone units. Ever since, spe- ally selected Evzones, each one of them at least seven feet tall, have filled the ranks of the Guard.
