There is no substitute for Newspaper Advertising Hollywood Sights And Sounds By Robbin Cosns. HOLLYWOOD, Cal, Jan. 4—Modern fable: A calculating swain decided to say it with flowers. He walked into the meadows and fields and gathered a bouquet in the lady's favorite colors, Only he didn't know much about flowers — or the lady, for that matter, ““Here, my fair one,” She recoiled. fvy i The .swain, whom we shall call Hollywood, is trying again. The lady, whom we shall call the South American movie market, still can be wooed and won. Hollywood is sure of that, or at least is gambling on it. The lavish “good enfhbor” pictures are going ahead, despite the several indications from down Argentine way that the first big one, “Down Argentine Way,” did little to increase Argentine love for Hollywood. Twentieth Century-Fox, regretting its social-cinematic errors as regards the Argentine, has taken extra care to avoid a repeti- tion for its “Road to Rio,” which has a Brazilian background. The studio took pains, though Argentina may doubt it, with its first big South American musical. And yet the picture fea- tured an Argentine gigolo, exalted the rhumba (which is Cuban). slighted the tango, and otherwise offended the good neighbors it was intended to please, For “Road to Rio” the studio submitted the script to the Brazilian embassy in Washington, had it returned ‘with minor changes — among them the suggestion that Carmen Miranda be he proffered his gift, “all for you.” “Nettles” she cried. “Cockleburrs! Working on the seript with Samuel Hoffenstein, the screen- playwright, ‘was Zacharias Yaconelli, native of Sao Paola, Brazil, and specialist in making foreign-language versions of films for Brazillan ‘and Portuguese markets. Gilbert Souto and Dante Organlini, newspapermen from Brazil in Hollywood, are other technical advisers, watching accents, the projection of Brazilian customs, manners in the film. Lou Brock, producing “They Met in Argentina” at RKO pro- fesses no alarm whatever over his film's prospects in the Argen- tine. By contrast with 20th’s apparent jitters, Brock seems almost complacent. “I've done a lot of traveling,” he says, “and I've spent a yaar and a half down there. Besides, I made ‘Flying Down to Rio’ seven years ago — and the picture is still playing in Brazil. That ought to mean something.” In Brock's musical the accent quvsuon is handled most simply. Alberto Vila, the Argentine singer, speaks with his natural accent. James Ellison and Maureen O'Hara speak in their natural voices, in characters requiring no Latin accents. So perbaps the lady, before the fable is played out, will yet exclaim, “What lovely roses, Senor, you bring this time!"
