Roy Herling, 21, was the first lost seaman who reached shore and scrambled up, battered, to the pier from a motorized surfboard onto the ground to comment, “Oh boy, does this solid stuff feel good.” He was followed almost im- mediately by Ronald Hieber, 22 who had a blackened, nearly closed eye. He attested the pummeling of the Coast Guardsmen who took io| heavy seas and nearly wrecked in the small open boats. Hieber ex- plaining his black eye said, “A bulk- head just up and struck me.” The men were landed by three fellow Guardsmen at the Point Arena sta- tion, making first series shuttle trips between shore and where the Ari- adne stood about a half mile oif shore. - MEN VS.
