" THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, FRIDAY, NOV. 15, 1940. 20-Game Winners On Coast SEATTLE, Nov. 15—There are a couple of Pacific Coast League pitchers who won 47 games between them while losing only 16, yet the’ chances are negligible that they will be snapped up by the mn]crs’ this winter. Kewpie Dick Barrett, rotund year-old right- hander, won games and lost only five for attle. In the six years Wwith club he's won 128 games, or average of 21-plus per year. Hal Turpin, another righthande:r, in his mid-thirties, won 23 games for the second straight pennant- winning year here, losing 11. And Turpirf is the fellow who, three years ago, was tagged as “through 32- —too old.” There have been cases where veterans in their thirties have| gone to the majors and made good, but they are few and far between, and both Barrett and Turpin are Coast'sFirst SkiEvent ¥ » o With white-caked Mt. Food is expensive as well as scarce, Rations of potatoes, bread and fats already have been cut down. It is difficult to buy eggs at any price, since the peas- ants keep them for their families. The average breakfast consists of two slices of unbuttered bread with jam and a cup of roasted barley brew, which is the coffee substitute. For lunch there is soup, potatoes purchased a month ago | when they could be bought, and a small piece of meat. For dinner there is soup, some vegetables and a bit of sausage.
