I've neyer seen anybody like anything more than Mr. Stewart liked the Merry Macs— proving Mr. Stewart does have time for comedy. The quartet is made up of the three McMichael brothers— Judd, Ted and Joe and Miss Helen Carroll, as personable a Dixie belle as ever came out of Memphis to the big time. The brothers started broadcasting in Minneapolis, and soon were touring with orchesiras. Chicago fame led them to New York, and to Fred Allen and thence to Hollywood — four years after they first took to the air. They've been in musical shows and made hit records They sing tunes like * ‘My Bonnie” and “Darling Nellie Gray” and “Ma, He's Making Eyes at Me,” to which they give per- sonalized embellishments and harmionies. Their vogalizations might be pegged as a sort of sophisticated hillbilly style, but those in the Know that their unique quality is ‘“bounce rhythm.” Their repertory includes some 120 songs. This, as Bing Crosby attests from his Rhythm Boys days, is phenomenal. “We had a tough time getting two or three numbers down right,” says Bing.
